Rome: January 2016, Day One

In January, my boyfriend and I took a trip to Rome for his 21st birthday. Here are some highlights of our first day.

View from St Peters Basilica
We arrived at our hotel in the evening, and decided to take a walk around our immediate surroundings, the famed Spanish Steps were a fifteen minute stroll from our front door.

For the first full day we took in the sights of the Vatican, having a walking tour around the museums and St Peter's Basilica. I took this picture from the very very top of the outside of the dome of St Peters! The journey to the top was pretty terrifying along ancient pathways and staircases, not one for the claustrophobic among us!

Love is in the Air
After we finished at the Vatican city we walked over to Piazza Navona, which was decorated with balloons, a carousel and many men brandishing bunches of selfie sticks. Be warned - if you do happen to take a selfie or anything that looks remotely like one, they will descend on you in a swarm!

The Pantheon was our next stop, this feat of architecture cannot be done justice through a photograph, if you can go, its stunning. The oculus at the top of the dome is nine meters wide and when it rains (which it did) the water just falls straight onto the marble floor.

Trevi Fountain
One of the best bits about Rome is that a lot of the main attractions are within walking distance of each other. So in one day we fitted in an early tour of the Vatican, Piazza Navona the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and Gelato!

We spent the next day at the Colosseum and the Roman forum. Post to follow soon!
